Morgan City Historic District Riverfront. Recently added to the national Main Street Program, Morgan City’s historic downtown is undergoing terrific revitalization. The riverfront area (Front St. to Federal Ave. and Greenwood to Railroad) is home to many unique shops, and close to several attractions within the historic district. Port of Morgan City. Nestled in the heart of the Gulf, the Port is 29 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. With a Congressionally authorized channel, 20 feet deep and 400 feet wide, Morgan City is the focal point of water transportation in four directions. Connected to the Atchafalaya River, Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, and the Bayous Bouef, Black, and Chene waterways, the port is uniquely situated to handle trade and traffic from the US and the world. Bayou Teche Scenic BywayBayou Teche Scenic Byway. This 125-mile route winds through St. Mary, Iberia and St. Martin parishes, and is home to two distinct cultures—French Cajun and the Anglo-Saxon - and a beautiful natural landscape. As you travel the byway, you’ll enjoy everything from moss-draped live oak trees along the banks of the Bayou Teche to 100 historic properties, many on the National Register of Historic Properties. Swamp Gardens & Wildlife Zoo. Situated on 3.5 acres of natural swampland, this heritage park displays and interprets Cajun culture, from the early beginnings with the Chitimacha Indians to the present. The wildlife zoo includes penned alligators, nutria, two black bears and other animals native to Southern Louisiana. Take a 45-minute guided walking tour through 3.5 acres of natural swamp depicting life in the great Atchafalaya Swamp and its native animals. Feed the alligators as you enjoy our waterways. Shrimp and Petroleum FestivalShrimp and Petroleum Festival. Jumbo shrimp capitol of the world, Morgan City celebrates the shrimp and petroleum industry with the annual Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival, held Labor Day weekend in the historic district. In 1937, Morgan City created the Louisiana Shrimp Festival, the state's oldest chartered harvest festival, to ensure a bountiful harvest. When the "black gold rush" marked Morgan City’s prosperity a decade later, petroleum was added to the four-day festival.

Brownell Memorial Park & Carillon Tower. A 9.5 acre natural park next to lovely Lake Palourde in Morgan City, Brownell Memorial Park is a designated bird sanctuary and a beautiful place for naturalists and photography buffs. The 106 ft. tall carillon tower contains 61 bronze bells, were cast in Holland, which play two selections every 30 minutes. Admission is free. Call (985) 384-2283.  [Top]

Morgan City Municipal Auditorium. Part of the Brownell Memorial Complex, Morgan City Municipal Auditorium boasts a Broadway-size stage in a 1,200-seat capacity theater, four meeting rooms, two concourses, and a 10,000-square-foot ballroom that hosts social and civic events throughout the year. The Auditorium is the Cajun Coast’s premier convention and events center.

Great WallGreat Wall. Located along the Atchafalaya River in Morgan City and Berwick, the Great Wall stands 21 feet tall and overlooks the mighty Atchafalaya River. Oaklawn Manor. This 1837 Greek revival plantation manor in Franklin is the residence of Louisiana’s Former governor, Murphy J. (Mike) Foster. Built by Irishman Alexander Porter, the walls are 20 inches thick. The home is furnished with European antiques, lovely bird carvings and an extensive Audubon collection. Take the 1-hour tour.
